Indolence

indolence · exhaustion · abandonment · disinvestment · stagnation
A reflective starting point
What is Eight of Cups — Indolence asking you to look at?
Meaning changes with the position, the surrounding cards and your question. Take what follows as a language, not a verdict.
Upright
Something has run out: acknowledge it and withdraw your energies to invest them where there is life.
At first sight
Emotional tiredness, disinterest, abandoning what no longer nourishes. It points to the end of an emotional cycle and the need to look elsewhere for new sap.
Within you
The exhaustion of someone who has given too much to something that gives nothing back; the apathy that signals a deep need for change rather than a fault.
On the path
Water in Hod, intellectual Splendour, with Saturn in Pisces in the first decan: the waters lose their current under Saturn's weight and their warmth goes out. Indolence is emotion that no longer flows, feeling turned to marsh.
The shadow
Ill-dignified, it signals depression, inertia, abandonment of responsibilities, resignation.
Reversed
In the Thoth tradition a reversed card is read through its dignity with the neighbouring cards; this is its shadow side.
Tiredness denied, an obstinacy to stay where you are no longer nourished; or a first return of interest and vitality.
In love, work and spirit
Love. Emotional detachment, a relationship gone flat; a need to ask honestly what remains.
Work. Demotivation, stalled projects, a wish to change field or pace.
Spirit. Detachment as a necessary passage toward deeper springs.

Crowley's note
In the Thoth deck eight low, cracked cups collect a few drops from withered lotuses, above a murky, motionless sea: stagnation under a leaden sky.
