luxury · comfort · emotional stability · contentment · inertia
A reflective starting point
What is Four of Cups — Luxury asking you to look at?
Meaning changes with the position, the surrounding cards and your question. Take what follows as a language, not a verdict.
Upright
Enjoy what you have, but stay alert: emotional stability can become a gilded cage.
At first sight
Comfort, pleasure, emotional stability, but also the beginning of weariness and boredom. It points to a satisfied emotional situation that risks becoming static.
Within you
The wish for emotional security which, once satisfied, risks turning into immobility: you guard what you have for fear of losing it, and meanwhile the feeling stops flowing.
On the path
Water in Chesed, Mercy, with the Moon in Cancer in the third decan: emotion becomes a reassuring habit. Luxury is established pleasure, but stagnant water already contains the seed of decay.
The shadow
Ill-dignified, it signals apathy, satiety, complacency, a refusal to grow.
Reversed
In the Thoth tradition a reversed card is read through its dignity with the neighbouring cards; this is its shadow side.
Boredom, dissatisfaction, a wish for something more; or resistance to emotional change.
In love, work and spirit
Love. A comfortable, reassuring relationship, perhaps a little routine; wellbeing needs renewing with small new gestures.
Work. A stable position, but perhaps unstimulating; a risk of stagnation.
Spirit. Telling the nourishment that sustains apart from the gilded cage that lulls to sleep.
Correspondences
Chesed · Water · Moon in Cancer
Crowley's note
In the Thoth deck four cups rest on a square base above a stormy sea: stability built on the instability of the emotions.
