Seven of Cups — Debauch

debauch · illusion · excess · temptation · self-deception

A reflective starting point

What is Seven of Cups — Debauch asking you to look at?

Meaning changes with the position, the surrounding cards and your question. Take what follows as a language, not a verdict.

Upright

Beware of illusions and of pleasures that promise too much: tell authentic desire apart from escape.

At first sight

Excess, fantasies, temptations, dispersal in pleasures. It points to confused choices, desires that intoxicate, seductive promises that do not stand the test of facts.

Within you

The seduction of illusion: you flee into fantasy or immediate gratification so as not to feel an emptiness. It asks you to ask yourself what you are really looking for.

On the path

Water in Netzach, emotional but unstable Victory, with Venus in Scorpio, her sign of detriment, in the third decan: love loses measure and is corrupted into craving. Debauch is pleasure which, deprived of Tiphareth, rots upon itself.

The shadow

Ill-dignified, it signals addictions, systematic self-deception, moral corruption, toxic environments.

Reversed

In the Thoth tradition a reversed card is read through its dignity with the neighbouring cards; this is its shadow side.

Waking from a spell and becoming aware; or a deeper fall into dependence if it continues to be denied.

In love, work and spirit

Love. Temptations, ambiguous or toxic relationships, idealisations bound to shatter.

Work. Vague projects, offers too good to be true, a dispersal of energy and resources.

Spirit. Purifying desire: telling living water from stagnant.

Correspondences

Netzach · Water · Venus in Scorpio

Crowley's note

Crowley paints seven iridescent cups dripping a viscous liquid, while the lotuses have turned into poisonous tiger lilies above a swamp: pleasure corrupted.
