Negotiation Spread

Four cards in a row: the real value of what you bring, how the other side sees it, your leverage and the approach to take. It prepares you for the conversation; it does not predict its outcome.

The positions

  1. Position 1

    Your value

What you really bring to the table: skills, results, the substance of your proposal.

What is what I bring really worth?

  2. Position 2

How the other side sees you

The picture the other side tends to form of you and your proposal, as a tendency: never a reading of their mind.

What picture of me and my proposal comes across?

  3. Position 3

    Your leverage

The firmest strength you have in this negotiation: what you can rely on.

What can I use as leverage?

  4. Position 4

    Your approach

The way of conducting the negotiation the cards suggest: the tone, the timing, what to put first.

How should I conduct the negotiation?

How to read it

  • Card 2 describes how the other side tends to see the querent, not what they think: it is a tendency to check in the conversation.
  • If card 1 is strong and card 2 weak, the issue is not value but its visibility: the advice works on how to show it.
  • A Major Arcanum in position 3 points to more leverage than the querent believes; the suit of card 4 sets the tone of the approach: Disks facts and figures, Cups the relationship, Swords clear arguments, Wands initiative.
  • The cards do not say how much to ask for or whether to sign: figures and clauses need someone who knows the case.

Positions to read together

  • Your value ↔ How the other side sees you. Il valore e la sua immagine: la distanza fra le due carte è il terreno su cui si gioca la trattativa.
  • Your leverage ↔ Your approach. La leva e l'approccio: come usare il punto di forza senza irrigidire il confronto.

Origin

A recent four-card spread laid out in a row, popular on career-focused tarot sites (Elvi Tarot's "Negotiation Prep") to prepare for a negotiation: a salary, a contract, a proposal to a client.
