abundance · celebration · fertility · shared joy · grace
A reflective starting point
What is Three of Cups — Abundance asking you to look at?
Meaning changes with the position, the surrounding cards and your question. Take what follows as a language, not a verdict.
Upright
A moment of joy and abundance: share it and celebrate with those you love.
At first sight
Abundance, celebration, fertility, joy shared with others. It points to parties, gatherings, moments of grace and a generous emotional harvest.
Within you
The joy that is born from sharing; the pleasure of receiving and giving without calculation. It calls for awareness so that abundance does not become dispersal.
On the path
Water in Binah, the Great Mother, with Mercury in Cancer in the second decan: love becomes fertile, shared form. Abundance is the fullness of the Mother, which however calls for care not to be taken for granted.
The shadow
Ill-dignified, it signals excess, dissipation, fleeting pleasures, superficiality.
Reversed
In the Thoth tradition a reversed card is read through its dignity with the neighbouring cards; this is its shadow side.
Too much celebration, pleasures that empty out, difficulty enjoying what you have.
In love, work and spirit
Love. Joy, celebrations, possibly happy news, even of a pregnancy.
Work. Collective success, a close-knit team, projects that bear fruit.
Spirit. Gratitude as recognition of divine abundance.

Crowley's note
Crowley draws three cups in the shape of pomegranates overflowing from lotuses: the fruit of Persephone, sweet but bound to the underworld, a reminder of the price of every abundance.
