A reflective starting point

What is Nine of Cups — Happiness asking you to look at?

Meaning changes with the position, the surrounding cards and your question. Take what follows as a language, not a verdict.

Upright

Your wishes find an answer: enjoy the happiness with gratitude and share it.

At first sight

Happiness, satisfaction, desires realised. It points to health, serenity, emotional and material success: traditionally it is the card of the wish fulfilled.

Within you

The joy of emotional fulfilment lived without guilt; the ability to feel content and to let this fullness radiate onto others.

On the path

Water in Yesod, the Foundation, with Jupiter in Pisces, his own house, in the second decan: the great benefic spreads the waters into a stable base. Happiness is emotion restored to balance after the trials of Netzach and Hod.

The shadow

Ill-dignified, it signals vanity, complacency, selfish satisfaction that ignores others.

Reversed

In the Thoth tradition a reversed card is read through its dignity with the neighbouring cards; this is its shadow side.

Happiness that is only a facade or depends on outside conditions; dissatisfaction hidden beneath appearances.

In love, work and spirit

Love. Serenity as a couple, shared wishes fulfilled, generous affection.

Work. Satisfaction, results achieved, recognition and financial stability.

Spirit. Gratitude as a spiritual act that multiplies joy.

Correspondences

Yesod · Water · Jupiter in Pisces

Crowley's note

In the Thoth deck nine cups arranged in a perfect square overflow with water poured from lotuses: happiness full, ordered and stable.
