Thoth Tarot · Major Arcana

The Sun

The Sun

joy · vitality · success · clarity · freedom

A reflective starting point

What is The Sun asking you to look at?

Meaning changes with the position, the surrounding cards and your question. Take what follows as a language, not a verdict.

Upright

Everything becomes clearer: success, joy and transparency. A favourable moment in almost every field.

At first sight

Success, joy, vitality, clarity. It points to a bright period, recognition, health and good relationships.

Within you

Fully self-aware consciousness, the joy of existing without shame; innocence regained after maturity.

On the path

Path 30 from Hod to Yesod, the letter Resh (the head, 200) and the Sun: the light that illuminates the intellect and the foundation. It is the Lord of the new Aeon, solar consciousness restored to humanity.

The shadow

Ill-dignified, it signals vanity, arrogance, blind optimism, exhibitionism.

Reversed

In the Thoth tradition a reversed card is read through its dignity with the neighbouring cards; this is its shadow side.

Joy that is clouded or inflated; the success is there but goes unrecognised, or turns into self-satisfaction.

In love, work and spirit

Love. Happiness, warmth, a sunny and sincere relationship; a bright period for the couple and for new acquaintances.

Work. Success, visibility, creative energy and recognition of merit.

Spirit. The light of the Self illuminating everything without distinction.

Crowley's note

Crowley's Sun announces the freedom of the new Aeon: two winged children dance on a green hill ringed by a wall, a limit humanity is called to overcome, beneath a sun surrounded by the twelve signs.
